| | Trampoline is dangerous... Last weekend I rented a cabin by the sea, and me and my friends went there for a fun long weekend full of fishing, boating, swimming, drinking and eating.
Next to the cabin there was a trampoline and all the kids from the other cabins were all jumping on it, doing somersaults forwards and backwards. Me and a friend of mine decided we had to try as well. Only normal somersaults only. This actually went pretty okay. At least for a while. Untill I landed with my ankle on the steel frame... After a while it turned into a pretty interesting blue colour. I iced it down and didn't think more about it.
Walked normal with it for a couple of days, so I thought the whole thing was over, and I left for work. After one day of carrying bags around airports and quaysides, and walking around with safety boots, the story was a bit different. The ankle was twice the size and it was blue. The ship had already sailed with me on board, so I'm stuck on board for another two weeks. Me and my foot went to the medic on board, and now I have to sit with my foot up on the table, and try not to use it much. Hopefully the swelling will go down soon, and this whole thing will be over. If not, I might have to go to the hospital and get it x-rayed when I get off in 12 days.
So what can I say; Trampoline is dangerous... But good fun, and I can't wait to try it again. And it is still 3 months till the skiing season starts up again. |

Oh no, astrid, so sorry to hear this!!!
Trampolines are indeed dangerous!! Here's HOW dangerous: where I live, they are not permitted on private property for insurance purposes! At ALL! I see that there are a few houses that have them, but if the insurance company finds out......canceled (of course, many many people have no home insurance here).
It is the same with water slides into pools, and some diving boards.
I hope you feel better soon!!! Please keep us updated. |

I think trampolines in places other than gyms are a little odd, but man, I remember them being so much fun!! My favorite thing we used to do in gymnastics as a kid was "popcorn", where 3 or 4 kids would sit on the tramp, and an adult would bounce, and pretty soon, the kids would all be flying all over the place. I remember laughing so hard that I actually peed in my pants. I was 7.
I saw one in a backyard in NH once and thought it was the biggest potential liability ever; plus, who knows if those things can withstand the elements and extreme temperature changes! |

| | Re: Trampoline is dangerous... In Norway they are really popular and it seems like every house have them. I haven't tried one for years, but thought it might be a good idea to practise some jumps before the skiing season starts. Next time I will try a much bigger one.
The one I tried actually had safety net around it, I was just being max unlucky with my landing. And now I'm just sitting here feeling sorry for myself and eat cake. Not the best way of getting in shape for the coming season.
One thing though, jumping on the trampoline is really hard work, and after 15 mins it feels like you've been working out for hours. Must be all the jumping... |

I had a trampoline when I was a kid, and we were on it EVERY day! No safety nets and we fell through the springs often! My mother had many a heart attack watching us jump around on it.
I hope you heal sooN! |

| | Re: Trampoline is dangerous... Here is an update from a very bored Astrid who still sits with her foot up on the pc table while writing. The swelling has gone down, but my foot is still blue. The medic wants me to come and see her twice a day now, instead of just one. She might be worried about me...
She also said that for my foot to look like this it had to have hitten the steel frame with the ankle bone, and that it must have hurt like hell... The only thing is, it didn't hurt that much.... My bf is still saying I should have gone to the doc with it before I sailed, but I didn't even think about it. In hindsight, I probably should have. I'm just not too found of the doctors.
The good thing is that today is Sunday which means Waffles for tea |

Oh boy....confirming what I've thought for many years about "home" trampolines....in fact, there was a classic episode of "The Simpsons" some years ago where they got a trampoline, and there were so many kids getting injured that they parodied the wide-angle injury scene from "Gone With The Wind" with everyone lying around in agony....
Just for comparative purposes in terms of protection and padding, etc., this is how training athletes are protected on trampolines in warming up for ramp jumping at the Kodak Sports Park in Lake Placid, NY. Take careful note of how incredibly protected the edges all are. (The overhead stuff is for harnesses for training serious jumps.) Kinda makes ya wonder about the home stuff, eh?
Feel better soon, astrid!! < big hug> |

I love trampolines for me...but, they terrify me when kids are on them. Even with the safety nets and padding over the side bars, it still makes me nervous.

. | A trampoline in your yard will get you HO insurance cancelled pretty much anywhere anymore. The AMA was trying to get them banned awhile ago due to the large incidence of dibilitating head, neck and back injuries. Initially they weren't as dangerous because they trampoline was larger and sturdier and those whom did own them generally owned them for the purposes of sports like skiing, gymnastics etc and knew how to use them. Once the box stores started porducing the $99 models, the quality went downhill and they ended up in yards where the users really didn't know how to use them safely. In addition, they were so small that kids were landing on their necks on the radial bars or missing the tramp completely and hitting the ground. The older tramps were ussually rectangular to prevent this. It's really too bad as it limits those of us whom really need to have them and would fork over the extra for a decent one of proper shape etc. |

| | Re: Trampoline is dangerous... Here is the good news. I am now allowed to wear shoes again, and I can walk for a mile or two with shoes on without my foot hurting too much. Most of the swelling is gone, and it's starting to get normal colours again. The medic has told me to be careful for another couple of days, and it should be okay. So in a few days you can imaging me having a dance around my office, being happy my foot is okay again.
I'm happy this didn't happen during skiing season, since that would have put me out of skiing for two weeks. |

DH, age 55, has been working for 30+ years in his industry, still only gets 3 weeks' vacation a year, much of which has to be spent working on our delapidated house...AND he works most holidays!! Don't ask what his daily work hours are.... |

I am still not allowed to train, and everytime I use shoes for an extended amount of time, my foot swells up again. It better be working perfectly again by november. I really hope to have a wonderful skiing season this year. |

Don't let it swell up, be careful.
About my DH, he is not in a union. He is a salaried executive. The vacation is pretty standard for most large manufacturing in US. 3 weeks after 5 years of service. I don't remember how many years until it's 4 weeks. He had 5 weeks in last job because he was there for 20 years. But the holiday work is something they all have to do, and there is rotation. He likes to work all the holidays because we don't have any family (except our son, who is 2500 mi away and also working holidays) -- then we can take however many days he worked after the holidays are over and go skiing when it is QUIET. It works out very nicely. |

| | Re: Trampoline is dangerous... After it swelling up again, and even I understood that I could not travel to work like this I went to the hospital. It was not broken or fractured as I was starting to fear. One inflamed muscle that has made me limping for a month. Especially when I use shoes, since I am then irritating the muscle.
Hope this go over quickly so I can start training for the skiing season. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
