Default Maine Handicapped Skiing

MHS - Maine Handicapped Skiing - based at Sunday River, Maine, but outreaching to many other Maine ski resorts, is one of the most awesome programs I have ever seen. Anyone with any handicap skis for free under this program: be it a need for vision guides, outrigger poles or full sled-rig. Quite a few of the (volunteer) instructors are paraplegic, AND THEY RIP.

This is my favorite local/skiing philanthropy, and I try to support every one of their fundraisers. No instructors are paid. It is 100% volunteer!!

That's awesome. I'm always inspired both by those that overcome challenges and those that help them along the way.

Slightly fftopic:

I saw a rippen' sight impaired skier a few weeks ago. I was absolutely floored by his grace and ability to adjust to whatever the terrain required.

If I'm ever half as good as he was I will be a happy camper!

MSL.....PHENOMENAL program! Mr. NVG/Snowflake (he's the same guy....we don't belive in polygamy ) and I were talking about this program that you posted about. Do they get to ski for free? That is amazing! How do they do it? Grants?

We'd LOVE to have more info!

MHS is largely fund raiser-sponsored. I don't believe they receive any United Way funding (although I could be wrong?) although there may be some funding via ADA and state sources. EVERYTHING TO THE SKIER IS FREE: lifts, instruction, modified equipment. ALL employees are volunteer, from the office to the lunch room (they have their own building). Their fund raisers are fabulously well-attended. It's all a joy to watch.
